A mania 2 of course, don't even know what superstars is I just prefer oldschool sonic.
Since Superstars was a disappointment I'd go for Mania 2 but of course Sega wouldn't hire Evening Star again because they don't care.

So I'll go with Penny's Big Breakaway 2.
The answer is neither or both.

Mania in terms of level design.

But Superstars in terms of not just reusing the same zones for most of the game, and deciding to be fully original.

I haven't been able to play the first one yet because it's a bit expensive. Is it good?

Even though they reuse stages, their design is still original, and that's why they manage to be much better than the poorly designed new stages in Superstars.

Mostly original.

Mania likes to do this thing where the start of Act 1 likes to copy paste level design straight from their source.

Which, the old level design is good, but if I wanted to play the old level design Id just play the older games.
Yes, but the team that made Mania, let them cook. They clearly understand Sonic level design better then any other team. Whether its' called Mania 2 or something completely new, I would love to see them continue on the series.

Sega should appreciate when they find a quality team for a franchise with struggling quality. Mania (old or new levels) is the only game that has matched Sonic 2 and 3 levels in quality. At least in 2D. I can't judge 3D, I never liked how Sonic controls in 3D. (Hoping they get there, loved Generations take 3D level designs.)
Personally, I'm going with Adventure 2.

That came out 25 years ago https://store.steampowered.com/app/213610/Sonic_Adventure_2/
Mania 2 there's no other match.

Mania 2 but only if we can play as AMY DESU!!!!!! SHE IS MY WAIFUUUU
Calm down, she's 12.
I'm pretty sure Sega doesn't actually disclose Sonic or his friends ages anymore because they don't seem to have a specific age (kinda like how SpongeBob always acts like a child but has a full time job at the Krusty Krab).

Actually she was born in 1993! So that makes her a 31 year old mommy :heart_eyes_yeti:
That doesn't work like that.

I'm glad they've toned down her obsession over Sonic because he's 15 so that would be weird (if he's 18 she'd be 15).
Sonic Megamix Mania is the closest thing to a Mania 2 and i'm hyped.
IMHO Superstars didn't do much right, But I would definitely like to see more of the emerald powers and more of Ohshima's work. Outside of that, definitely a Mania 2.
