Popular upcoming -> Upcoming (Huge change) Reconsider some stuff.
Popular upcoming has been a crucial goal to chase for developers in getting 5k-7k wishlists, which promotes us for couple days on front page near our release resulting in 1k-4k wishlists.

This section helps mid sized games the most in getting a great boost pre-launch. Big games barely feel the impact of it, they don't need it.

With the change, it's seems to remove the ordering we had before, which just makes bigger games take over these spots. While I'm not against the idea to improve "Upcoming" widgets and have more, removing the old popular upcoming hurts these mid sized games chance to gain traffic right before release.

It's also going to create friction in devs mindset because they lost their goal to achieve 5k-7k wishlists, and now they don't have anything tangible to work towards.

In short, I agree we need better Upcoming widgets but removing the old Popular upcoming is not just an algorithmic change but also a mindset shift for us developers. Consider these factors please!

Steamworks group for game devs...

:nkCool:
Exactly. I reported this when the beta first came out but so far Valve still hasn't changed it. Here - https://vip1.qiannidekk.tk/groups/SteamClientBeta/discussions/3/803469628489688288

You can still find the normal upcoming page if you click the top bar "browse" to "upcoming releases", but this will still result in a lot less traffic for games.

Not talking about the button, the front page 10 short list is actually changed now.

Maybe they should have two tabs? One for indies and one for the big games?
It would be a shame if this change is fully implemented.

Having a clear goal for us mid-sized developers that leads to a significant impact via front page visibility is a great feature.

It's the only place on Steam where you can guarantee some amount of front page visibility for a brief window if you reach the threshold. Everything else is too nebulous to account for.

This change would lead to more visibility for games that already have tons of visibility at the expense of mid-tier games who benefit most from this meritocratic opportunity.

This would make the most sense. I'm all for "upcoming major releases" kind of tab but I don't like the fact that it's at the cost of indie developers.
This seems to be terrible news for small to mid sized indies who rely on this. A bunch of cool games have surfaced from this feature and it keeps smaller indies just about in business. We'll get none of that, to be replaced by much bigger titles getting more airtime, meaning less innovation and less indie titles meeting success. Would Lethal Company or Schedule I or dozens of other indie hits have ever made it without Popular Upcoming. Doubtful if you ask me. Valve please reconsider this change.
From a player’s perspective, I really enjoy browsing the “Popular Upcoming” section and discovering new games.

With this change, it’s a bit disappointing because I feel like I have fewer opportunities to explore and come across fresh titles.
Without it, I’m now being shown more of the same big “chicken franchise” chains.

Relying only on the Discovery Queue hasn’t been very helpful for me either.
It’s like being served the same chicken dish every day, today, tomorrow, and all year long.
I hope Steam to keep the popular upcoming and add more tab instead of doing this.
Agree with OP. I wonder how Valve will offset this to surface indies.
Agree with OP. Reaching popular upcoming for us as indie developers was a great way to gather great visibility before the game launched. Please reconsider this change.
Make life harder for indies, still take a 30% cut. Makes sense right... These super popular games are already going to get lots of exposure from the front page including the top widgets.
Really hoping Valve reconsiders this or offers some other way to surface upcoming indie titles. Its hard enough trying to compete with other indies and now having to also fight giant studios with massive marketing budgets is just super demoralizing.
this change looks like it'll be a strict disadvantage for smaller devs. @steam please reconsider.
Less discoverability for indies leads to less diversity in choice. This is a really really bad idea.
