The game used to be good but now it's under Gearbox and Take-Two and subject to their awful EULA that I did not agree to. I can't recommend anyone buy this unless it changes hands again.

The story and art are fine. The rest of the game is mind numbingly bad.

Each chapter you progress through the same poorly laid out dungeon three times. You have different starting/ending warps but they didn't bother to close off dead ends.

Then once you think you're done with the game they force you to play through the last couple of chapters three more times. The story is different but it's the same maps and recolored enemies with more health. The development team got handed a competent story and art then wasted it by not putting in the effort on their end.

I really had to push myself to finish this because other reviews said the story made it worth it in the end. I don't know if I really agree but to each their own. If you do end up playing this I recommend just playing on Easy. The difficulty levels scale enemy ATK/HP but ATK is barely scaled and HP is scaled massively. Playing on Hard is only a waste of time.

Usually I never complain about game prices but if this game had a low budget development it should have a low budget price. I paid $20 and maybe that's fair but $60 sure isn't.

This game plays close to exactly what I would want out of a Fate action rpg I just wish the writing wasn't so terrible.

The devs find a new way to introduce game breaking bugs in every update. I wouldn't mind as much if they actually fixed the bugs within a timely fashion, but you're just stuck with a broken product for months at a time,

edit: I have 100 more hours now than when I wrote this review so Steam keeps asking me to reevaluate it. The new DLC maps are great and much better than the original levels and there have been lots of improvements to the way the game plays, but my recommendation will stay the same until TRS stops finding new ways to break things each update.

This game is visually impressive and has a great atmosphere, but unfortunately that's where my praise has to stop. The combat turns the game into a complete slog. The original Half-Life had incredible monster AI which is completely lacking in this game. The enemies don't work together. They focus the player immediately when line of sight can be drawn. There is no sneaking around or causing infighting. I think the Black Mesa devs knew this and purposely redesigned some of the encounters to reduce monster variety. I tried really hard to have fun but I'm not so I'm just going to go back to the original Half-Life.

I played this as a joke. It's missing several core functions that a VN needs, like multiple saves. Now Steam keeps recommending me other trash VNs because it knows I played this. I'm leaving a negative review in hopes that the recommendations stop.

Update: I have also marked this game as "Ignore" and I am still getting recommendations based off of it.

Early Access Review
I know this is early access and that's exactly why I'm giving it a thumbs down right now. The game has a lot of potential to be great, but it is far from it. It is better than the first, but there is a lot more work needed to be done than the one month that the dev states in the early access description.

The game doesn't feel good to control. The animations of the character lag, making movement awkward. The leaf attack is difficult to use because of how long the delay is between the button press and the animation/attack. This is especially true of the shot, I often fire in the wrong direction because I turn after the animation ends but the water droplet fires even later. Those issues combined with the way you get stunned make combat extremely painful.

Right Trigger is implied to warp you back to the start according to an in game sign but it does nothing. I had to hold E on my keyboard to warp.

I might be missing it but I'm not seeing a HUD anywhere.

There are a lot of areas that seemed like side paths that I could explore that were just simply dead ends. Filling the world with more collectables would be nice so you have a reason to venture off the trail of berries that lead to your goal.

The game needs better optimization. I jump from 60 fps all the way down to sub 25 frequently.

The camera feels like it's on ice.
